The Act is an American true crime drama web television series that premiered in eight parts on March 20, 2019, on Hulu. The first season is based on the real-life of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, who was accused of abusing her daughter by fabricating illness and disabilities as a direct consequence of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Joey King portrayed Gypsy, while Patricia Arquette played her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.

Both, Joey King and Patricia Arquette were nominated for lead and supporting actress for the Emmys and Golden Globes last year. The Act was Hulu’s breakout hit of the year and received optimistic responses from fans and critics. However, Hulu has yet to renew the series for a second season. Probably because the series is billed as an anthology series.

Is There Hope For Hulu’s “The Act”

The Act is a seasonal anthology series, which means if the show returns for another season, it would focus on a different “stranger-than-fiction true crime story.” The tale of Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee is over, but The Act as a series may very well still continue.

During a March 2019 interview with Esquire, Act co-creator Michelle Dean elaborated on what type of stories the show may explore in a potential second season.

The Act was designed as an anthology: obviously the title refers to a couple of things,” Dean said. “Obviously the act of the crime, but also the act that Dee Dee and Gypsy were putting on for the public, so yeah. If there were a Season Two, those are the stories that we would be interested in telling.”

In the aforementioned interview with Esquire, Dean briefly spoke about a second season.

“There’s no Season Two right now, in the sense that Hulu has not picked it up,” she said. “We’re still in post-production, so I think we’re focused on getting this story out to the public, and we’ll think about it.”

When asked about his plans for the second season by Business Insider, Nick Antosca told “I don’t know what the story for season two would be. There would only be a season two if the right story presented itself. I’m sure that if the right story presented itself, that would happen. But it’s all story dependent”

The Real Gypsy Blanchard May Take Take Legal Action Against Hulu

“I am unable to watch ‘The Act,’” Blanchard said in an emailed statement to online women’s magazine Bustle, referring to conditions of her prison sentence.

“However,” she added, “I feel it is very unfair and unprofessional that producers and co-producer Michelle Dean has used my actual name and story without my consent, and the life rights to do so. Therefore, there will be legal action taken against the show’s creators. I want to share my story and bring awareness about Munchausen by proxy, in the hopes that I can encourage those who might be experiencing abuse to speak up because someone WILL listen. No child should ever be abused especially from their parent.”

Eh, If this really happens we might not be able to see a second season of The Act but who knows.
