The Great is a satirical, comedy-drama television series about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. The series is fictionalized and portrays Catherine in her youth and marriage with Emperor Peter III (amalgamated with Peter II) focusing on the plot to kill her depraved and dangerous husband. Hulu announced its plans for The Great in February 2019 and the show premiered 15 months later, in May 2020

The series is based upon Tony McNamara’s play revolving around Catherine the Great, which premiered at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2008. McNamara also wrote a film adaption of the play, “It had been a play and a film, and I was always struggling with the fact it was such a massive story for a film. I wanted to tell it as a story that goes for years and years.”

The series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter. The show was originally billed as a miniseries, However, Hulu renewed the period piece for a second run just shy of two months after taking into consideration that there’s still much story to tell.

So, When’s The Second Season Coming Out?

Keeping in mind with the whole Covid-19 situation, The Great, like many other Tv and movie productions has been halted until further notice and will not be going back into production for a big while.

However, Tony McNamara is working on the script and he has some “Great” and wild ideas for the next season.

Exploration Of “The Great’s” Second Season

McNamara revealed that he had always wanted a couple of seasons to tell this story of Catherine the Great. When asked by Collider about his plans for season 2. He said:

“I mean we could tell it in four [seasons], we could probably tell it in three [seasons]. I don’t really know. I think it’s also now I realize the characters are so great across the board — we have 12 great actors playing really great characters and that’s just good TV, so it does seem like there’s a lot to get out of them. I’m not sure [how many seasons it will run] at the moment, I’m just telling the story and we’ll see where we get to.”

And while McNamara originally pitched The Great as a The Crown-like show that would swap out actors as the characters got older, he’s in no rush to let go of Hoult and Fanning:

“I think the initial pitch was we’d sort of do a few seasons of young and a couple of seasons of middle, but at the moment that’s sort of in the deep background of my mind. At the moment I’m really happy with these guys.”

In August, When McNamara talked to Deadline about the show. He said “ [We’re] in process. We’re trying to work out how you make a TV show with all the protocols that you need in place, safely. That’s what everyone’s doing, I guess. So, that’s a challenge. Then, story-wise, it’s going to be very similar, but very different, I guess is the way you try and do it. I don’t know that I can give any story [details]. It’s just going to be quite fun. I pitched it to Nick and Elle the other day, and they were very excited.”

Macgowan told Decider that they would like to explore the class divide in Russia more in Season 2. “I think if Season 2, if we were to be so lucky, we would certainly explore that more. Because she would become more active, and therefore, it would be more relevant,” she said.

The preceding season will continue from where the first installment left off. One of the lead stars, Elle Fanning, disclosed on Entertainment Weekly:

“I feel like season 2 would probably continue on this story. I don’t know exactly when it would pick up, but it would be us at this age. We have our fingers crossed.”
